About Dice
Knowing
the dice combinations is an important aspect of Craps.
Two dice can roll 11 numbers (2 through 12) with 36
combinations; they are as follows:
#2 can be rolled one
way -- 1,1
#3 can be rolled two
ways -- 1,2 - 2,1
#4 can be rolled
three ways - 1,3 - 3,1 - 2,2
#5 can be rolled four
ways -- 1,4 - 4,1 - 2,3 - 3,2
#6 can be rolled five
ways -- 1,5 - 5,1 - 2,4 - 4,2 - 3,3
#7 can be rolled six
ways -- 1,6 - 6,1 - 2,5 - 5,2 - 3,4 - 4,3
#8 can be rolled five
ways -- 2,6 - 6,2 - 3,5 - 5,3 - 4,4
#9 can be rolled four
ways -- 3,6 - 6,3 - 4,5 - 5,4
#10 can be rolled
three ways -- 4,6 - 6,4 - 5,5
#11 can be rolled two
ways -- 5,6 - 6,5
#12 can be rolled one
way -- 6,6
Notice the
“pyramid” effect with the number seven having the most
combinations; therefore in the long run the seven should
appear six out of every 36 rolls.
On the Come-Out roll segment the Do bettors have the
advantage. During
the Point segment the Don’t bettors have the advantage
because seven has a better chance of appearing than any of the
point numbers.
I want to point
out what I call SISTER POINT numbers. Sister Points are two “point” numbers that have the same
amount of combinations. These
are the 4 and 10 at three combinations each, the 5 and 9 at
four each, and the 6 and 8 at five each.
The Sister Points will become important when we start
discussing Crap Odds.
I have a strong
fascination with dice; these cubes present a lot interesting
tidbits that intrigue me.
The number seven has the most combinations, and the
opposite numbers of each face add up to seven.
The opposite face of number one is six, the opposite of
two is five, and the opposite of three is four.
Crap dice are
made of celluloid plastic and measure three-quarters of an
inch per side. They
are manufactured to extreme precision with perfectly sharp
corners—there can be no nicks, scratches, or surface
blemishes. You
may observe a Boxman closely inspecting the dice, especially
if they have rolled off the table.
Complete randomness must be present and if any flaw is
found the die may have a tendency to land a certain way and
the Boxman will remove from play.
My favorite
aspect of Crap dice is the nicknames and phrases given to the
numbers. Some of
these have been passed down through generations and some have
surfaced in the present.
